Australian Working Holiday Visa

If you’re coming to Australia for a GAP year or a working holiday you will need to get The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417 visa) This will enable you to up to a 1-2 year stay and give you the right to work in Australia. ( Unless you been sponsored or arranged another form of Visa)

The Australian Working Holiday Visa is available to people from Belgium, Canada, the Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

What are the Basic Requirements:

Ofcourse there’s a few requirements that need to be met,

  • hold a passport issued by an eligible country or region
  • be aged 18-30 (inclusive) at the time of applying
  • not be accompanied by dependent children at any time during their stay in Australia
  • meet health, character and financial requirements
  • not have previously entered Australia on a Work and Holiday (462) visa
  • not have previously entered Australia on a Working Holiday (417) visa (unless applying for a second visa)
  • be outside Australia when they apply and when their visa is granted (unless applying for a second visa)
  • apply within 12 months of intended travel to Australia.

How Can I get extend my visa to live and work in Australia for upto 2 years?

It’s not as simple as “extending” your visa, you will be required to undertake 3 months of “specified work” within the first year of your stay. Upon completion you can apply for the 2ndworking Visa.

Whats the 2nd working Visa?

Basically the 2nd working visa is a year extension on the intial working holiday visa if you satisfy do 3 months of specified work. This is the great part about doing fruit picking, after 3 months of getting a tan and picking you are eligble to stay in Australia for an Additional year! Awesome!

What is specified work?

This is the definition provided by the department of immigration:

“Specified work* is work that is undertaken in a ‘specified’ field or industry in a designated regional area.

Specified work includes:

Plant and animal cultivation

Everything from fruit picking and packing to pruning and trimming vine trees to general maintenance crop work

Fishing and pearling

Work directly related to catching fish! Cmon Fisherman!

Tree farming and felling

Planting and felling trees in a plantation or forest

Construction

Building Construction, scaffolding, waterproofing of buildings

Mining

Coal Mining, metal ore mining, oil and gas extraction
