Asparagus harvest speared by worker shortage

A shortage of workers at Koo Wee Rup in Victoria has meant one farmer has had to plough more than eight hectares of his asparagus crop back into the soil.

But grower Allan McDonald says the asparagus is growing too fast for the pickers, and he’s only got half the number of pickers he needs.

“With the change in weather, the product is starting to come through and the labour that we’ve got can’t quite cope,” he said.

“They’ve just budgeted for what they’re getting, not for what they might get.
