ruit and Vegetable Fair where, once again, the mainland Chinese interest in Australian cherries was very strong.

With a Chinese delegation expected to tour Australian growing regions later this month, hopes are high that this enormous and lucrative market might be about to crack open.

Cherry Growers chief executive Simon Boughey says industry representatives had “very good” discussions with China’s biosecurity and quarantine authorities this week.

“Both [those bodies] were very, very keen to progress the development of the agreement and protocols, so they’re in the process of organising to send two officers out here in late November to have a look at three or four of the states.”

In the past, access to the Chinese market has followed quite quickly after similar visits from Chinese officials.

Mr Boughey says there’s a reasonable chance that will be the case this time too.
